DC Disconnect Switch FAQs

Find answers to common questions about DC disconnect selection, certifications, outdoor installation, and photovoltaic and energy storage applications.
What certifications are required for DC disconnects in solar and energy storage applications?

Certification requirements depend on the application, system design, and applicable electrical code. Telergon S6, S6R, and S7 heavy-duty DC disconnects are available with UL 98B certification, while F7 compact DC disconnects are available with UL 508I certification. Many models are also designed to IEC 60947-3. Always verify the certification and ratings of the specific model for the intended installation.

Yes, when the selected disconnect is properly rated for the system voltage, current, circuit configuration, and application. Product suitability varies by series and model, so verify the published ratings for the specific installation.

The required enclosure rating depends on the installation environment. Outdoor, rooftop, wet, dusty, or corrosive locations may require NEMA / UL Type 4 or 4X or an appropriate IP rating. The complete installed assembly, including the enclosure, operator, and mounting arrangement, must maintain the required environmental rating.

Interrupting DC is more demanding than interrupting AC because DC current does not naturally pass through zero each cycle. DC disconnects are specifically designed and rated to safely interrupt and isolate circuits at their published DC voltage and current ratings.
