AC Disconnect Switch FAQs
What electrical standards apply to disconnect switches in power distribution panels?
Applicable standards depend on the disconnect type, product series, and intended application. Telergon AC disconnect products are available with certifications to applicable UL standards, including UL 98 and UL 60947-1 / UL 60947-4-1, depending on the series. UL 508A governs the construction of industrial control panels and how components are applied within the panel. Many Telergon switch-disconnector families are also designed to IEC 60947-3. Always verify the certification and ratings for the specific product series.
Can Telergon disconnects be used as the main disconnect in UL 508A industrial control panels?
Yes. UL 98 certified Telergon switches are approved for use as main or feeder disconnects within UL 508A certified industrial control panels, providing both load-break and isolation functionality.
What enclosure and handle ratings should be considered for indoor and outdoor installations?
The enclosure and external operating handle should be selected for the environmental conditions of the installation. Type 1 is commonly used for protected indoor locations, while Type 4 and Type 4X provide increased protection against water and windblown dust. Type 4X also provides additional corrosion protection for demanding outdoor or washdown environments. The handle and enclosure should have compatible ratings so the completed installation maintains the required environmental protection. Telergon offers compatible external operator handles with NEMA / UL Type 4X ratings on applicable disconnect families.
What is the difference between fusible and non-fused disconnects?
A fusible disconnect combines load-break switching and isolation with fuses that provide overcurrent and short-circuit protection. A non-fused disconnect provides switching and isolation only, with overcurrent protection supplied by a separate upstream fuse or circuit breaker. Fusible disconnects are often selected when integrated branch-circuit protection or a higher short-circuit rating is required, while non-fused disconnects provide a simpler solution when appropriate upstream protection is already provided. Telergon’s M3 fusible range uses Class J fuses on the current U.S. products and supports ratings up to 200 kA SCCR when applied as specified.
